Elementary Statistics

Complete these tasks before our first class:

* Watch this video: Welcome!
* How to be a student in a flipped classroom (about 11 minutes). The class I'm using as an example is not stats, but you'll get the idea.
* Read this information on MyMathLab that you should have received in an email.

You do not need to do any of the assignments outside of this box until after our first class.

9/1: In-person learning today! Live Stream Links Are On the Help Page - FINALIZED

Exercises assigned today are due as noted. There is nothing to turn in for reading assignments, but there could be a quiz or writing assignment over that material. Online assignments are submitted electronically, and I anticipate that most of our assignments will be online.

You are encouraged to use my office hours (Zoom or in person) for help on the homework. However, you may not ask questions over homework on the day that the assignment is due.

Do NOT assume that any assignment beyond today's is correct! I often change them the day of class.

Reading Assignment that you must complete before our next class, which is on Friday, September 8.

* Read the course introduction (syllabus), also available on on Schoology and on the Help Page. This document contains information that you may need to know. Some of it could appear on a quiz.
* Read the Carthage Academic Honesty Guidelines. There is a link at the top of this page.
* Read this page on homework expectations.
* Read this page on free tutoring opportunities.
* Skim Chapter 1 on the terminology of statistics.
* Read this article on statistical significance.

Activities You Need to Do Before Class our next class, which is on Friday, September 8.

* Take this brief background survey. (Yes, this is required, and you will receive credit for doing it!) You will need to log in to your Carthage account.
* Create an account on MyMathLab and enroll in our course. There are instructions at this link. I will check this on Friday right before class, and you will receive a few points for creating this account! If you don't have a code, sign up for a free trial and get a code as soon as possible. There is no reason not to do this!
* Do the MyMathLab assignment over the material we covered in class today. Note: Under normal circumstances, this assignment would have been due on September 6. Yes, that is a Wednesday, and we do not meet as a class that day. This is the best way I've found to collect homework on Monday-Friday classes. Homework assigned on Monday is generally due on Friday, while homework assigned on Friday is usually due on the following Wednesday. I want to make sure that you have time to ask questions if you have any, provided that you start your homework in a timely manner!
* Take this quiz. If you are in class, we will take this quiz before the end of class today. This will count as a quiz. After you take the quiz, you should receive an email confirmation so you can check your answers. If you are not present in class, this quiz should be completed before class on Friday, September 8.
* Check the blog (see the link on the left side of this page) for updates. You should check the blog every day. I will provide homework hints, comments on how our class went, and more!

Required Videos to View Before Our Next Class our next class, which is on Friday, September 8.

* There is a handout on the Help Page with the link "September 12". With the handout available either printed or online, watch these videos and take notes either on the handout on in a separate document. If you have access to a printer, print a copy of the handout to use while watching the videos. If you do not have access to a printer, copy the handouts onto a piece of paper to use while watching the videos.

This will count as a quiz. After you take the quiz, the answers should appear on the screen. You should also receive an email confirmation so you can check your answers.

* MyMathLab didn't really have any good videos on this topic. When there are some, I will let you know here.

* The MyMathLab assignment over this material is officially assigned on Friday, September 8, but you should start it now to see if you have questions.

Optional Material

* I have created an optional video assignment in MyMathLab, containing additional examples and instructional videos over the material that we covered today in class.

* I have also created an optional video assignment in MyMathLab. The videos cover histograms and how to make histogram in Excel. If you are using Excel, you may want to check that one out. There are also videos available on frequency tables. I put them in the assignment, but I don't think you'll need them.
